Outdoor Meeting posted on 02/07/10 by Yvonne

On the 10th May s the weather was dry and not too cold, we took our Monday night to Ice House Hill.
Whilst there we put into practice some of what we had been practicing in the winter months. We worked in our sixes and set tasks for each other. One group of young people set a track and trail course which the other groups had to navigate.
Another group worked on tent-pitching and the third group completed an observation type quiz. After approx 15 mins on each base we rotated so that everyone got the chance to do all 3.
When everyone and everything had been packed up we sat in and around "Speakers Corner" and talked about the One Programme. Plenty of questions and we are all sooo looking forward to what this programme will bring to all of us. Whilst talking about forthcoming events we also took this opportunity to discuss the sixers and seconders for the forthcoming term...

Sleepover posted on 01/05/10 by Yvonne

13 cub scouts, along with leaders, had a sleepover in the Scout Hall of St. Patrick's Scout Group last night. This night had been in the diaries for a while as were looking forward to Sean preparing and cooking a 3 course meal (as part of his Chef badge).

Whilst Sean and Sheila prepared their ingredients the rest of us got busy with our grass heads. There certainly were some strange looking characters made.....they will look all the more interesting when the grass starts growing.

Dinner was superb.....and as in the tv programme "The Restuarant" Sean was awarded 5 stars from his fellow cubs. The starter was melon served with fresh fruits. We then tucked into chicken korma with rice. Butterfly creams were for dessert......totally delicious.

We headed out on a late night stroll and visited our old Scout Den. It's terrible to see how delapidated it has become, we are so lucky to have a new venue. Back to the hall for more fun and games and then our campfire.....and what a campfire....some brilliant new songs with everyone joining in.....somehow I think the boys just shaded the girls in the singing.

After some small snacks it was time for bed. Despite some calls of "But I'm not tired" everyone was asleep by 12.45. A first for the first night of camp.

7.15am and everyone is well rested and getting dressed and putting mats/bags/pillows etc. back into our rucksacks. Breakfast consisted of fresh fruit/cereal/toast and tea. We tidied the hall and then waited on parents to come. Now when is the next one???

Badgework posted on 13/04/10 by Yvonne

Quite a busy night last night, with 3 of our Cub Scouts letting us know how they are progressing on their chosen badges.

Caoimhe and Orla told us about the books they are reading as part of their Book Reader Badge. We all liked Orlas 3D glasses, which really brought the sharks to life. I will have to get myself a copy of Captain Underpants....interesting reading indeed!!

Aoife is working on her Artist Badge and was telling us all about Chloe.

The Cub Scout folders have now been updated and will be added to in the next no of weeks.

Trip to Fire Station posted on 30/03/10 by Yvonne

Hello all,

Our visit to the Fire Station was quite productive last night.....if there were any forms to sign in order for us to be junior fire personnel we would have done so on the spot.

The Cub Scouts were surprised that there is only 1 female fire fighter in Dundalk, one lady out of 36 fire fighters who are based in Dundalk. We had lots of questions and were very surprised when we heard about the reduction in staff numbers etc. Lots of good questions and points were raised, some of which we will be testing the cub scouts on at our next meeting.

This visit was part of our Emergency Badge work and we are very thankful to both Vincent and Noel for the time given to us last night. Remember parents "thumbs up and check your fire alarm every week"

Star Scout Show (update) posted on 29/03/10 by Yvonne

Hello all,

Have to say it was a great afternoon. We were given special seats in the balcony area of St. Pat's College which enabled everyone to have a brilliant view of the stage.

Groups taking part were from Dublin, Waterford, Ratoath, Kildare and Carlow. Snippets from the following shows Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors were unbelievalbe.....good enough to go to the West End.

Have to say though that our favourite was the presentation from 5th Carlow which gave us an insight (albeit funny) into how movies are made and produced. E.T., Indiana Jones were favourites....

We also enjoyed the presentation from the Kildare Group showing the different types of dance......YMCA with the little guys was deadly....

In fairness, every act was great, fair play to all involved. Some of our cubs want to take part in the show next year!!

County Cub Craft Day posted on 21/02/10 by Yvonne

Hi all,

What a great day. For a while last night and early this morning there was a fear that the day might have to be postponed due to the bad weather, but thankfully, it was able to proceed.

Plenty of activities to keep us all busy today.....Fortune Telling, Bookmarks, Stone Mad, Bangles, Origami, Badge Making, Popcorn Pictures, Knot Board, Marshmallow Animals, Campfire Songs and Magic Sheets.

The Cub Packs were mixed so that everyone got the chance to mix with cub scouts from different parts of the Scout County. We have taken plenty of ideas away with us and will work on some of them over the next no of months.

Photos were taken, hopefully we can upload them shortly.
